Choosing My Natural Hair

Choosing my Natural Hair…… PATIENCE’s amazing NHJ story

At first glance, she looks to be a much laid back person. What is interesting about her though is the fact that she is very passionate about natural hair. Patience shared her natural hair journey with us, and we are excited to share it with you. Ride along, dear reader!

“I completed high school with natural hair and got a job on my vacation. I would wear my natural hair to work but I never knew that it irritated my boss. One day, my boss asked me to either be smart at work or quit my job. Her idea of smartness meant me having to relax my hair. I went back home and cut off my hair because I needed to keep my job.”

She says that as time went, she realized that treated hair seemed to paint the wrong image of her personality. She felt plastic in every way and it appeared like she was fronting a person she was not on the inside.

“I got a job with MAC Cosmetics and I was challenged to do my big chop because my job gave me a platform to be real with myself in every way. My treated hair was not helping in this environment, so I did the big chop. Nobody cared how my hair looked at work each morning. I felt I was finally in my zone and set out to do crazy and kinky styles in my hair depending on my mood”

She waited until she had two inches of growth to take the plunge. Talk about boldness! All she wanted was to rock her natural hair as soon as she could. “My hair texture has allowed me to play about with styles like Bantu knots and my twists last for a whole month in good shape!”

“Every day is a memorable experience with my natural hair. I love to express myself through my hair and make-up given how I feel at the time.

“My natural hair journey has turned out to be very smooth because this time round, I have had enough information at my disposal from the natural hair groups I am in. I google a lot and do simple DIY styles. Being intentional about my natural hair has made it an interesting journey for me. My hair type is coarse and has low porosity. Its texture is tricky but all I mind about is volume; the length has not been my concern

She has adopted daily spritzing her hair with rosewater, applying coconut oil with Kentaro leave-in conditioner with a wash twice a month as her regimen.

“Every woman should do what they feel most comfortable to them because it helps to get more in touch with the inner self. Natural hair is very manageable, you only need to be informed about your hair type and how best to handle it”

When asked what she thinks about the natural hair movement, she said that it will give every woman space to accept who they are and also pride in themselves.

Patience is truly living and basking in her identity…….   IT’S THE NATURAL HAIR WAY…
